The Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre will become one of Eastern Canada’s premier sport, recreation, and wellness facilities.  With an anticipated opening in September 2012, preparations are now underway to constitute an Operating Board that will provide governance and leadership for all operational elements of the new facility.  The 10 member Board will comprise 6 community members and 2 municipal council representatives each from the Town of Truro and Municipality of Colchester.

 The Town of Truro and Municipality of Colchester are presently seeking six highly motivated, skilled and dynamic citizen representatives to fill vacancies on the Civic Centre Operating Board.  Three representatives from each municipal jurisdiction will be sought and appointments made by respective Councils. Individuals interested in participating in this capacity are asked to respond in writing by February 24, 2012. Applications must outline areas of interest, credentials, related experience, contact information, as well as any other relevant information.

It is amazing what can happen in a month, and in the case of the construction of the Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre, it is even more impressive.  Since my last editorial, significant progress has not only been made with the construction of our new Regional Civic Centre but also with the Ignite the Spirit Campaign and I am pleased to share that milestones continue to be achieved and construction continues to move along given the ups and downs that Mother Nature has thrown at us. 2011 has proved to be a year filled with many milestones and achievements for the Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre Project.  It is hard to believe that this time last year the first pour of concrete was arriving at the site and one year later we can look at the building and get a sense of what the finished product will look like.  Project Co-Chairs, Greg MacArthur and Bob Taylor are pleased with the progress to date and together with the rest of the project team and the community are counting down the days until September, 2012 when the facility is anticipated to open. The Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre Project’s newly formed Art Acquisition Committee is seeking the talents of a professional artist or artist team for exterior artwork to be located in the concourse area of the new Centre through a Call for Expressions of Interests. Community volunteers, Debbie Elliott, Dee Appleby and Beth Johnston are leading the way on the initiative which seeks to attract the artistic talents of current or former residents of Nova Scotia. Fredericton, NB – The MHL and Premier Sponsor Kent announced on Monday that the 2013 Fred Page Cup Eastern Canadian Junior A Championship has been awarded to the Truro Bearcats. Truro, who last hosted the event in 2002, will play as host team and will welcome Champions from the MHL, Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League and the Central Junior A Hockey League. The Bearcats will welcome visiting teams with a new facility as the Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre, set to open in the fall of 2012, will be the host venue. (more…)

It is hard to believe that construction of the Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre is moving into its fifteenth month and that in another ten months the doors will be opening providing the people of Central Nova Scotia with a new health and recreation centre to call their own.  Throughout the planning process, project staff and volunteers have taken the time to visit comparable facilities around Atlantic Canada and into Ontario. Throughout these visits we were always inspired by the “community feel” within the facilities and the comments by staff and members about how their new Centre has become a community focal point. The hustle and bustle of activity in these centres really puts into perspective what we have to look forward to in September 2012 when the ribbon is cut and the doors are opened to the Central Nova Scotia Civic Centre. A major hockey event could be coming to Truro if all goes well between now and Christmas.  CoRDA’s Destination Colchester along with the Truro Bearcats and the Civic Centre Committee are ready to submit a bid for the 2013 Fred Page Cup.  (more…)
